The Delhi police crime branch has arrested four persons involved in motor vehicle theft. Seven members of the gang have been arrested so far and 51 stolen vehicles were recovered, police said.
According to the police, the accused have been identified as Sariq Sata (47), kingpin of the gang, Furkan Sheikh (40), Sageer Ahmed (34), Sikender (28), Sariq. Earlier, three members of the gang namely Kalia alias Safruddin, Tirath and Naveen were arrested.
"During their interrogation, the accused disclosed that Sariq Sata, was the kingpin of the gang and since 2012, he along with his associates Sageer, Sikander and others were involved in stealing luxurious cars from Delhi and NCR areas. The accused persons then disposed these stolen vehicles at Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujrat, Maharastra, Kerala, Karnataka, Mumbai & North East Regions, Rajesh Deo, DCP(crime) said.
During the sustained investigation, police found that the entire process of vehicle theft and its disposal was carried out in three tires. The accused Safar, Sikander, Sageer and Naveen used to steal vehicles whereas Furkan tempered with engines, chassis number and then forged documents to get the stolen vehicle re-registered with the authorities. Meanwhile, Sariq Sata and Tirath sold these them as genuine vehicles.
"Police found that prior to the theft of a particular vehicle, the accused persons scanned and located the vehicle of a particular make and colour, which was declared a total loss vehicle by the insurance companies. Such vehicles were then purchased by them through scrap dealers at a higher rate," said Deo.
Subsequently, while the total loss vehicle was disposed of, the documents of such vehicles were retained. The accused then target a vehicle of same make and colour and get these vehicles stolen, he added.
After stealing the vehicles, they obliterated the original engine number and chassis number of the stolen vehicle. The engine and chassis number of the total loss vehicle are inscribed on the stolen car and the stolen vehicle is given an identity of a new vehicle, the officer said.
Sariq Sata has 43 cases registered against him. He was carrying a reward of one lakh on his arrest by Delhi Police and Rs 20,000 by Sambhal police.
